Although many regulations define both serious adverse event and serious adverse reaction, they are distinct concepts:

  • Serious Adverse Event (SAE): classified by outcome or regulatory seriousness, regardless of causality.
  • Serious Adverse Reaction (SAR): a serious event for which a causal relationship with the investigational product is at least reasonably suspected.
